Nothing else in history is like the 2020 presidential election. Take the evolution today: Joe Biden has a virtual island now.
An official outpost for Animal Crossing was created by the former Vice Presidents’ Campaign: New Horizons. Each player in the game has an island and is encouraged to visit each other’s homes. The island of Biden has red, white, and blue bunting, the mark of Biden-Harris — and the man himself. Well, of course, a Biden digital avatar in a gray suit fitted with a pair of aviator sunglasses. The banner also guides players to visit the Biden SMS campaign website IWillVote.com, which is financed by the Democratic National Committee.
The Biden camp had previously worked with Animal Crossing to allow players to insert Biden branded clothing into the game and place Biden lawn signs on their island. The Animal Crossing Partnerships are a way for Biden, a demographic that, during the Democratic primary cycle, but which has largely supported him against President Trump, to market itself to younger voters.
In May, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of N.Y. Starts playing the game and visits a few of the islands in the game after asking 6.8 million people on Twitter to invite her. Biden is not the only high-profile Democrat to have used Animal Crossing as a way to connect with the voters this year. Ocasio-Cortez said that her “confidence in humanity” was restored on Twitter.
Animal Crossing sold 22 million units this year, bringing the Nintendo Switch console to a sales boom. By August, the video game maker had accumulated $2 billion in revenue, 23 percent higher than the previous year.
